Scenes from Indonesia

Posted on 03 February 2009 by Terry

Ecologically blessed, economically challenged, vast and diverse, Indonesia is a country of contrasts. made up of 17,500 islands (only about 6,000 of those inhabited). Indonesia is populated by over 230 million people, speaking over 740 different languages and dialects within 300 distinct native ethnic groups - it is the fourth most populous country, after the United States. Impoverished conditions amongst people living in an area so rich with natural resources has also put extreme pressure on the environment, as increased mining and deforestation make more of an impact. Collected here are only a handful of photographs from Indonesia over the past several months - again, it’s impossible to sum up such a diverse subject in a single collection. (32 photos total)

Since 1998, 22 elephants were born at Way Kambas Elephant Conservation Centre. Sumatran elephants, the smallest of all Asian elephants, are facing serious pressures arising from illegal logging and associated habitat loss and fragmentation in Indonesia, said Conservation Centre authorities. Seattle take 2

seattle skyline image from Kerry park using gradient and textures in Photoshop CS4

I played around with the Seattle image a bit more from this post, adding an image I was able to get through the NASA website. This is a gold mine for texture images and other than for advertising, they are in the public domain.

Check out the NASA gallery and start adding to your texture library.

Looking Back at 2008

Posted on 30 December 2008 by Terry

2008 has been an interesting year for our country and every facet of our economy and this year was the most memorable in all the years I can remember. But instead of pointing out all the negative news and future prognostications, I thought it would be great to do a year in review of a few images. A few of these images, normally would not see the light of day, but I thought readers would enjoy seeing them. On a technical note, these were created to be web ready through Photoshop at 60% quality, to allow for faster downloads.

Some of the photography highlights for me, were shooting in Mexico with the beautiful models from Guadalajara and being chosen as a winner in the travel category for PDN (Photo District News) Magazine.  I also had another image placed on a magazine cover, D’Antro Magazine.

I don’t make many new years resolutions, but this year I have a business idea that has been brewing in my head for quite awhile, this year my goal is to bring it to market, providing the numbers make sense in a down economy. As usual I will be shooting lots of models and am available for travel worldwide.

Venice under water

Posted on 04 December 2008 by Terry

The recent “acqua alta” (high water) in Venice, Italy reached a depth of 1.56 meters (5 ft, 1 in.) on Monday - the deepest flood in 22 years, and the fourth highest flood level in recent history, claimed Venice’s Tide Center. The water began to subside on Tuesday, while residents and tourists made their way through the city, hip-waders or not - one man even took the opportunity to ride his wakeboard through Piazza San Marco (until police stepped in). Although this flood was severe enough for the mayor to ask tourists to temporarily stay home, Venetian floods are fairly routine, several occurring every year, and residents usually take it all in stride. Tourists take photos of each other in the flooded Piazza San Marco in Venice December 1, 2008. Large parts of Venice were flooded on Monday as heavy rains and strong winds lashed the lagoon city, with sea levels at their highest level in 22 years. Ferry and water taxi services in the city were suspended and Venice’s mayor urged people to stay indoors. Tourists and residents struggled to get across the city over raised walkways. The Centro Maree, which forecasts water levels, said sea levels in the Adriatic rose 1.56 meters (5.1 ft) - a level not seen since 1986. (REUTERS/Manuel Silvestri)
